Here, the Schlöder family has set up a paradise for holidaymakers: on a plot of land covering 6,500 sqm, guests can experience the most natural form of living in harmony with the countryside, surrounded by linden trees, chestnut trees, fruit and walnut trees.
None other than the internationally successful architect, Matteo Thun, known for his holistic, sustainable approach to architecture and interior design, helped the family with the planning and implementation. The result is 20 small holiday homes in total, which are made of local slate.
They feature plenty of light, clear lines and reduced design: a lot of wood, as well as natural and indigenous materials determine the furnishing. On the floor Matteo Thun opted for a light, bleached oak engineered wood floor from Parador with a naturally oiled finish, which fits in harmoniously with the overall ambience.
Each little slate house has a wood patio and its own garden, which is surrounded by “edible” raspberry hedges. Matteo Thun also decided on Parador floors for the patios: oak outdoor planks from the Trendtime range extend the living area to the outdoors. The untreated surfaces of the outdoor floor are allowed to develop their own patina caused by natural weathering, in keeping with the overall holistic concept. The basic form of the gardens is a classic kitchen or herb garden. For a personal sense of well-being, guests are allowed to select a favourite garden: cool, shaded gardens, cottage gardens full of herbs, bulging orchards or fragrant rose gardens invite guests to watch the world go by.
The project was awarded the “Wine Architecture Prize 2013” by the Rhineland Palatinate Ministry for the Environment in collaboration with the Chamber of Architects and the German Winegrowers' Association. The architect firm, Stein-Hemmes-Wirtz, looked after the building project locally, whilst the individual gardens were designed by the landscape architect, Johannes Cox.
